Harbert Timeline

Journey through the rich history of our parent company and discover how we began.

    • 1949

      Brothers John and Bill Harbert, along with Ed Dixson founded the original Harbert Construction Corporation.

    • 1950’s-1970’s

      Harbert Construction Corp. completes several notable projects including the Red Mountain Expressway cut and Riverchase land development.

    • 1981

      Harbert Construction Corp. gets restructured into Harbert Corporation.

    • 1983

      Harbert Corporation forms Harbert Properties Corporation (later re-named Harbert Realty Services).

    • 1984

      Harbert co-develops Riverchase Galleria.

    • 1989

      Harbert becomes a major competitor in the commercial construction market across the Southeast, constructing the 32-story AmSouth-Harbert Plaza in downtown Birmingham.

    • 1990

      John Harbert retires and hands the reins to his 31-year-old son, Raymond Harbert. The company shifts its focus to energy, commercial real estate and portfolio investment.

    • Today

      Harbert’s real estate and capital divisions operate under Harbert Management Corporation, a leading investment management firm. With approximately $8.1 billion in Regulatory Assets Under Management as of March 31, 2025, we continue to build on this legacy.
